I’ve heard some people criticize David Crowder for the song he sings with the above chorus repeated often, saying it’s lacking in depth or understanding of Who God is, etc. After my Bible study this morning in Ephesians, I couldn’t disagree more with that assessment of his song!
I believe that if people really grasp the love of God (and truly KNEW the love of Christ <sup class="xref" value="(AR)”>that surpasses knowledge) there would be a depth of Christianity in the church and the world that would far exceed our expectations. Yes, God is holy and just and powerful, etc. But at the heart of it all, God IS love, and God loves us beyond our comprehension.

Too often I live my Christian life out of duty rather than delight because I don’t fully appreciate the love God has for me (and the world). Paul pleaded with God that the Ephesians would comprehend His love. Fully comprehending the love God has for us is the only way we will truly love others as we should. And loving others, putting them before ourselves, is the most Christ-like thing we can do.
As I did a quick review of the NT today after my Bible study, I was again struck by how often Paul stressed that love was more important than knowledge. In the passage in Ephesians 3 he says it “surpasses knowledge”. In 1 Corinthians 8 he says that knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. In 1 Corinthians he says that love is greater than faith or hope.

Singing about, and reciting over and over again in my heart and mind, how great the love of God is for me may seem shallow or lacking in depth. Some may think it is over emphasizing a characteristic of God.
I believe that God Himself is the One Who initiated the emphasis on His love for us … “but <sup class="xref" value="(L)”>God shows His love for us in that <sup class="xref" value="(M)”>while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Jesus loves me this I know. For the Bible tells me so….
over and over again.
