As Forrest Gump said in one of his most well-known quotes (quoting his mama): “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
I’ve thought about that quote often as life is so … well, daily. The truth is, we don’t know what we are going to get in the next moment, do we? Our lives can change in an instant. What we thought would never happen, happens. What we thought would happen, doesn’t. People we never knew existed become our greatest friends. Some people who we thought would be our greatest friends for life abandon us or reject us. Unexpected life begins … a new baby will arrive. Unexpected death happens … and leaves our families saddened and grief stricken.
In James 4, it says: Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town, stay there a year, conduct business, and make money.’ You do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
So James said it before Forrest I guess. 🙂 And God said it before (and to) James.
It’s true. This life is like a box of chocolates, and as a human, I have no idea what is coming next. Like someone once said – I do not know what the future holds, but I do know Who holds my future. And so I do not boast about what I will or won’t do tomorrow, nor do I worry about what will or won’t happen tomorrow. I will hopefully put my life in the hands of the One who knows me best and loves me most and rest in Him. In the scheme of things, this life is a vapor. Truth is, I’m living for the next life. And in that life, I actually do know what I’m going to get! Jesus Himself told us:
There are many rooms in my Father’s house. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going away to prepare a place for you? And if I am going away to prepare a place for you, I will come back again and welcome you into my presence, so that you may be where I am.
And that is all I really need to know! 🙂
