My Pastor’s Prayer

This was my pastor’s prayer yesterday (yes, the same one who is also my hubby). I believe it is a great one for us all to pray tonight!

“Father, we are at an important crossroad in our nation. This week we will elect our next President. I pray that we, and all of your people in America, would follow our Biblically-trained consciences and vote in a way that will promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.
Remind us as we think about this election, that your word tells us to not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving to make our request known to you. As we pray for this election, we are showing that our hope for the future of this land is in You. We will not trust in “horses or chariots”, we will not hope or trust in the political process, or in our favorite candidate or political party. We will be involved in politics, but we do not and will not make an idol of politics. We trust in You, in the name of the Lord our God. We know you change times and seasons, you remove kings and set up kings, and we know that victory does not come from the east or the west or from the wilderness, for you are the judge, you bring one down and exalt another.
We know that the hope of our nation, is not in making laws but making disciples. Our purpose, as your church, is not to win elections, but to win souls. However, motivated by neighbor-love, as individuals, we long, pray, and work for better laws and leaders.
Yet, we trust and worship You alone, because You alone are great and You alone are only good. You reign, whoever is president. We will be subject to the governing authorities because those that exist or will exist are established by You. Yet, when submitting to leaders or laws, means disobeying You, we will obey You rather than man. We will render to Caesar the things that are Caesars and to You the things that are Yours. We will pray for all kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way because this is good and is pleasing in your sight, God our Savior, the One who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
‘God our Savior’ – what an amazing phrase. We look for that blessed hope and Your glorious appearing, the appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works. Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus. Amen.”
