The “us” of Genesis 1. Triune God. The Godhead, three in one. The Trinity. One God, three Persons.
In my quest to more fully grasp the work and ministry of God the Spirit, I have decided it’s important to make sure my foundation has been properly established. And to do that, I have gone back to the beginning of time, when “the earth was without form … and the Spirit of God hovered … and God spoke”. I do that because we’re told that in the very beginning God our Creator Father spoke; and the Word (that became flesh and lived among us) was with God in the beginning and the living Word was God; and the One that descended in power on the Son at His baptism was the same Spirit of God who hovered over creation at the beginning.
Although I don’t understand it – and won’t for now – I have decided to trust in a God who exists and moves in three distinct persons, while still being ONE. I’ve chosen to have the Hebrews 11 kind of faith (trust in what I can’t yet see) as I study the scriptures about a triune God. And honestly I’m thankful. I’m thankful that I follow and serve a God who is so big I can’t fully comprehend Him, but so tiny that He walks with me close enough to know how many hairs I have on my head!
“In Christianity God is not a static thing … but a dynamic, pulsating activity, a life, almost a kind of drama. Almost, if you will not think me irreverent, a kind of dance.” Tim Keller always finds a way to bring life to the Word of God. Referencing thoughts from CS Lewis, he explains that the Father, Son, and Spirit are each centering on the others, adoring and serving them. When we find someone we adore and who adores us, “it sublime.” The world has been created by a God who is infinitely happy. A God who exists in three Persons who equally adore and serve each other. No person in the Trinity insists that the others revolve around him. Each one voluntarily circles and orbits around the others. And if we are One with God through Jesus the Son, our ultimate reality is to be part of the dance of the Three.
If this is ultimate reality, if this is what the God who made the universe is like, then this truth bristles and explodes with life-shaping, glorious implication for us. If this world was made by a triune God, relationships of love are what life is really all about.
Are you in a dance or do you just believe God is out there somewhere? Are you in a dance or do you just pray to God every so often when you’re in trouble? Are you in a dance or are you looking around for someone to orbit around you?
If life is a divine dance, then you need more than anything else to be in it. That is what you’re built for. You are made to enter into a divine dance with the Trinity.

But we were made for more than rhythm with no reason
by the One who moves with passion and with grace
as He dances over all that He has made …
