Top Ten Words of … Ever

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets;
I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

Jesus

The Ten Words of God have changed due to the coming of Christ – transformed but not trashed. We can no longer keep the Ten Commandments rightly unless we keep them in Christ, through Christ, and with a view to the all-surpassing greatness of Christ. As new creations in Christ, the law is not only our duty but also our delight.

I am the Lord Your God. You will not worship other gods.
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, a testimony at the proper time. (1 Timothy 2:5)
For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesu every knee will bow  — in heaven and on earth and under the earth — and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is LORD, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

You will not make and have idols.
So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. (Colossians 3:1-5)
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know the true One. We are in the true One — that is, in His Son, Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, guard yourselves from idols. (1 John 5:21)

You will not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, Your name be honored as holy. (Matthew 6:9)

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
“Or haven’t you read in the law that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent? I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If you had known what this means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. A person is worth far more than a sheep; so it is lawful to do what is good on the Sabbath.” (Matthew 12:3-12)
Therefore, a Sabbath rest remains for God’s people. For the person who has entered His rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from His. Let us, then, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience. (Hebrews 4:9-11)
One person judges one day to be more important than another day. Someone else judges every day to be the same. Let each one be fully convinced in his own mind. Whoever observes the day, observes it for the honor of the Lord. (Romans 14:5-6)

You will honor your father and mother.
Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise. (Ephesians 6:2)

You will not commit murder.
Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler. But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed but let him glorify God in having that name. (1 Peter 4:15-16)

You will not commit adultery.
I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. (Matthew 5:28-30)

You will not steal.
Let the thief no longer steal. Instead, he is to do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share with anyone in need.
Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 5-6)

You will not give a false witness against your neighbors.
But let your ‘yes’ mean ‘yes,’ and your ‘no’ mean ‘no.’ Anything more than this is from the evil one. (Matthew 5:37)

You will not covet your neighbor’s possessions or people.
Do not owe anyone anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandment … do not covet, and any other commandment, is summed up by this commandment: Love your neighbor as yourself. (Romans 13)

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! You who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, having been set free from sin ...
Now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life."
