My Hiding Place … and it’s not a Secret!

Early when the day is new before the stirring,
I will come and talk to You and confess the ways I am broken.
To recall the words you’ve spoken and to try to comprehend the love You have for me.
You are my hiding place.
You fill my broken heart with songs, songs of deliverance.
You sing of how the weak are strong. You never meant for me to walk alone.
You are always for me, as the truest Lover of my soul.
You hear my desperate calling. You have kept my feet from falling,
and have set me on this rock on which I’m standing now. (Sara Groves)

There are certainly times in my Christian journey when I need a hiding place. But all too often I’ve found it in the wrong places! I run to my room, close the door, and cover my head to escape the worries of the day. I lay my head down and try to sleep away the discouragement. Or I turn on the the tv to drown out the mind noise of confusion, doubt, anxiety, and resentful thoughts. But the whys and the whats remain. When I arise, or awake, or turn the tv off … they are with me still. The reason is because my hiding place is not a good one. In fact it shouldn’t even be a place! It should be a person!

Psalm 32:7 (New Living Translation) puts it like this: For You are my hiding place; You protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory.
The psalmist knew where to turn when he needed a place of refuge and/or retreat. Or maybe I should say to Whom to turn.  In fact, this appears to be David’s cry to God after his great sin with Bathsheba. If, after adultery, murder, cover up, and more, David found the grace and strength to go on to exclaim later in the passage: Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart … why wouldn’t I choose to run to that hiding Place?
The Lord IS faithful. (Has been and will be). He will forgive. Restore. Bring peace and joy!

My daddy told me on Facebook recently that years ago there was an energy-building “medicine” for people with ‘tired blood’ called SSS Tonic. He used to say that Exodus 15:2 is the REAL S.S.S. Tonic! The Lord is my Strength, Song and Salvation! Amen to that, Daddy! So when I am weary. When my strength is almost gone, may I run to the SOURCE!
THE hiding Place – Jesus, the true lover of my soul.  When I’m tired, He is my strength. When I am discouraged He is my song. When I am overwhelmed by circumstances of life, He is my salvation.

Whom have I in heaven but You?
And earth has nothing I desire besides You.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever…
But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds. (Pm 73)
