Our God is all we need – the great I AM! God does answer the prayers of His people. But He does so in His time and in His way, according to His will.
I love learning about the God I serve through His word…
David fasted and prayed for his son to be healed by God, but he died. He said to the confused people around him after his son’s death, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept because I thought, ‘Perhaps the Lord will show pity and the child will live. But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Am I able to bring him back?'”
Elijah prayed and God answered in mighty ways. But shortly after a great miracle of God, he still lacked faith and ran away scared.
In Acts 12 we read of the followers of Christ and how different the outcomes were in the lives of James and Peter. James and Peter were both arrested but only James was killed. God freed Peter. When the scene flashes to other believers, we find them praying together. The bible says that they were earnestly praying for him. But their response to Peter arriving at the house was priceless. It seems as though, in their earnest praying for Peter, they certainly weren’t praying with much believing faith because they didn’t even believe he was at the door!
If they prayed for James (I think we can rightly assume that they did), it would seem God wasn’t listening, because James was dead.
I remember well the weeks and months leading to Y2K. Christians were worried, anxious and even frantic – praying, planning and preparing for a dreaded future that never came. Did God spare us from collapse then? People have prayed for storms to pass over – sometimes they do. Sometimes they destroy property and devastate lives.
So, why do we pray? Does it matter? People showed faith in God but it seems He didn’t answer their prayer the way they prayed. Others seem to pray with little faith, and yet God answered. What do these stories and countless others say to me about the God I serve, trust, and love? I have come to believe these things about God and prayer:
I believe that God has called His people to be people of prayer- in times of plenty and in times of crisis.
I believe that God hears us and loves us.
I believe that God says in His word that He will answer us.
I believe that God is trustworthy and keeps every promise He has ever made. When I can’t trace His hand, I always can trust His heart.
I believe that God is always … always … always working. Always!
Seek the Lord while He makes Himself available; call to Him while He is nearby! The wicked need to abandon their lifestyle and sinful people their plans. They should return to the Lord, and He will show mercy to them … and will freely forgive them.
The LORD says: Indeed, My plans are not like your plans, and My deeds are not like your deeds, for just as the sky is higher than the earth, so My deeds are superior to your deeds and my plans superior to your plans. In the same way, the promise that I make does not return to Me, having accomplished nothing. No, it is realized as I desire and is fulfilled as I intend.”
Let us hear today the sovereign voice of I AM.
